My Irish grandmother divided her relatives into three sorts: raw, untutored “Shanty Irish,” pretentious “Lace-Curtain Irish,” and (possibly us?), “True Irish.”
Her definitions were based on something deeper than money: character. Which brings us to these trousers of pure Irish Donegal wool.
Immense character. And what sort, exactly? Not the kind that’s at home mucking out a stall or that strikes artificial poses – they look ridiculous with a glass of rosé. But they’re perfect for a ramble through Galway, gathering material for that next great novel.
Donegal Trousers (No. 1789). Substantial, soft wool herringbone fabric from the granite hills, tailored with full dress-trouser details, e.g., suspender buttons, watch pocket, hidden coin pocket, satin lining to knee. True Irish.
(A definition loose enough to include even the occasional Hungarian, like my grandfather.)
Men’s even sizes: 32 through 46. Hemming (max: 37") or cuffing (max: 34"), add $2 per pair.
Color: Brown with Gold herringbone with flecks of Cream, Rust, and Tan.
