Early Spring in D.C.
I take a long, brisk walk past an exuberance of cherry blossoms. Lucky timing.
Now I’m on the Metro and, in another stroke of luck, seated next to a strikingly attractive woman. I attempt to figure her out without risking eye contact.
Classic black pumps. Conservative purse. Small string of pearls. Navy blue button-front dress. All of that makes sense. This town is all business some days.
But the polka dots. Not white. Fuchsia. She's torpedoed my conjecture with those dots.
And, to my chagrin, caught me staring.
We reach her stop.
"Lovely dress,” I manage to stammer as she stands to leave. She smiles, shakes her head just so, and walks away.
Mystery is rare, and still beautiful.
