Five-Card Rodeo.
You might imagine I spotted this one in Missoula or Fort Worth, but that’s not the case.
It was Madrid, in a flat over a farmacia in the Barrio de las Letras. I'd been invited by a textile merchant to join his private game of Texas Hold ‘Em.
Josefina, across the table, wore this. Over the next five hours, I never quite pinned down her accent or, to my misfortune, her tell.
Around 2:00 a.m., I walked out onto an ancient cobblestone street, the contents of my pockets measurably lighter.
