The 18th century French aristocracy discovered a wonderful remedy for that heavy, dull, stuffy feeling we all get now and then.

"Toile de Jouy," they called it, or "twahl," for short.

Light, airy, printed fabric with scenes of pastoral life, mythology, exotic travel, flora, and fauna, verging sometimes on the whimsical.

It provides a gentle uplift to a person's imagination.

Marie Antoinette, weary of thick, ornate brocades, couldn't get enough toile. Made her feel like she could breathe again.
