The Top Bid Leather Vest

To the distinguished gentleman in the leather vest. 

The item, I believe it was a Civil War era Elgin pistol, came down to him and another man sitting near the back of the 18th-century auditorium. The distinguished gentleman wore the lambskin vest with a shirt and tie. There was a soft wool jacket, but that came off rather quickly. The tie soon after. 

When an auction comes down to two, it gets interesting. Eyeballs meet eyeballs. Tempers flare. 

Things get personal.

The gentleman made a bid that effectively said he didn’t care about the item’s value; he was going to get it. Then he turned around to face his opponent and in his normal voice (the key is not to shout or whisper), told him, “There is no way you’re going to win.”

He was right.
