This T-shirt’s story points eastward to the Mediterranean, where sailors and fishermen have worn snug short-sleeved shirts like this for centuries.

I thought oyster shuckers in Baltimore were fast—until I saw a man in Piraeus wearing this shirt, shucking even faster.

On the banks of the Seine, students and tourists wear blue-and-white striped shirts, hoping to pass as natives. But that deckhand, throwing a hawser to a tour boat? He’s wearing this shirt. In Bilbao, I observed a crew of moving men uncrating a giant piece of highly advanced sculpture. They were built like great sagging old bulls; in this shirt, they looked formidable.
