I remember that she sharpened her pencil with the sheepsfoot blade of an old pocketknife and swept the trimmings to the floor in one fell swoop. It didn't seem to occur to her to sweep them up, and so they remained underfoot to become part of the floorboards, the lore, the very bones of the place.

The years have erased the name of her store and the town, but I think she talked me into a meaningful quantity of lantern wicks.
