Lady Mary Heath.
Lady Mary Heath was born Sophie Catherine Theresa Mary Peirce-Evans in 1896 in Limerick County, Ireland. Over time, while her name became shorter, her list of bona fides grew exponentially. A few highlights:
- Dispatch rider in WWI,
- Published poet,
- Published author,
- Set world records in high jump and javelin throw,
- First woman member of the London Light Aeroplane Club,
- Licensed to fly both privately and commercially.
In February 1928, she embarked on the expedition that
would make her world-famous: the first solo flight by a woman from South Africa to England. When she arrived in London, she stepped out of the plane wearing a silk dress, fur coat, and black straw hat.
All style.
She declared flying to be “so safe that a woman can fly across Africa wearing a Parisian frock and keeping her nose powdered all the way.”
Not a stretch to imagine she would appreciate this silk jumpsuit, too.
